For Parents
On January 23, 2001, President George W. Bush established the No
Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). The
NCLB Act was enacted by Congress
and signed by President Bush on January 8, 2002. The Act holds
schools accountable for the achievement of all students based on
four basic principles:
1. Stronger accountability for results
2. Increased flexibility and local control
3. Expanded options for parents
4. Emphasis on teaching methods that have been proven to work
The federal government has mandated that each student that attends a
school district that has schools that have been identified as “in
need of improvement” for two consecutive years and whose family
meets income guidelines is eligible to receive free tutoring.
These funds have been distributed to each school district through
Title I educational mandates. School districts are required to
inform parents their child/children are eligible for these funds at
the beginning of each school year.
The intent of the NCLB Act is to close the achievement gap between
economically disadvantaged and minority students and their peers who
attend schools that have met federal and state standards. For more
detailed information, visit the U.S. Department of Education's
website on the
NCLB
Act.
Parents may call their school’s office to find out if the school and
the parent are both eligible for NCLB funds. Please see
Enrollment
Guidelines on how WEI can assist you if you need help completing the
forms.
