Tutoring
Curriculum & Family Services
Student’s enrolled in WEI’s Supplemental Educational Services
(SES) program demonstrate improved academic performance. WEI’s
curriculum and approach with students and their families result in
improved grades, test scores, and attendance. WEI will provide:
High Quality Instructional Materials
WEI uses the “Spectrum Test Prep” (McGraw Hill Children’s
Publishing) and the “Show What You Know® (Show What You Know®
Publishing) workbooks as its primary testing and instructional
sources. These supplemental educational materials are designed for
grades K-12 and align with
Ohio’s New Academic Content Standards.
Specific materials for each student are selected based on the
child’s educational needs and the testing year approaching (4th, 6th,
9th/10th, OGT). The instructional tools help students reduce any test
anxiety and improve their test-taking skills by practicing with tests
that simulate the Ohio Achievement Test (OAT) or Ohio Graduation Test
(OGT).
Pre and Post Assessments
Using information provided by the school district, (OAT scores, report
cards, and Individualized Learning Plan), WEI develops a customized
tutoring program for the student based on his/her needs rather than a
group of students needs. Each student takes a pre-test that provides a
starting point so the student, his/her parents, and WEI can accurately
gauge the student’s progress in reading, language arts, and math
during their enrollment period. Our approach:
- Builds students confidence as they see steady improvement with a
focus on “showing what they know”
- Eliminates frustration as students work at their own pace
filling in gaps in past instruction and learning with one-on-one
tutoring and guidance
- Increases students’ enthusiasm for completing the program as
mistakes are viewed as clues and opportunities to close gaps and
improve performance
- Transfers their growing confidence and knowledge to the
classroom and test readiness
At the end of the school year, all students take a post-test that
documents student improvement and provides direction for the next
year’s tutoring if necessary. If the student’s school district remains
in “needs improvement,” the student is encouraged to continue the free
tutoring to build upon his/her success and achieve or exceed grade
level performance.
One-on-One Instruction
Students in grades 3-12 receive one-on-one instruction with no more
than four students assigned to one tutor.
Knowledgeable and Committed Instructors
Our instructors’ academic backgrounds range from high performing
undergraduate and graduate school college students to advanced degreed
certified teachers. All instructors have passed a rigorous hiring
process and have demonstrable skills in their subject areas as
verified by college grade reports, teaching experience, and teacher
certification in the subject area. Tutors complete an intense one week
orientation and training program before meeting with families and
students.
Program Length
Each student receives 40-50 hours of free tutoring. WEI’s goal to help
each student complete the program in the time s/he needs rather than a
pre-determined amount of time. The average time commitments are:
|
Elementary:
Middle School:
High School: |
Two, 1 and one-half tutoring sessions
per week for 26.5 weeks
Two, 2 hour tutoring sessions per week for 20 weeks
Two, 2.5 hour sessions per week for 16 weeks |
We encourage parents to call the instructor (see your Enrollment Packet)
in addition to their child’s school to report an absence.
Individual Improvement Plan
Before meeting with students, WE&I will review all relevant
information (school grade reports, school district information,
interviews with parents and students) to develop a customized plan of
action (Individual Improvement Plan) to meet the unique needs of each
student.
Ongoing Communication
Parents/guardians receive regular feedback on how their child is
progressing. We encourage families to visit the tutoring site to
observe the program in action and learn ways to reinforce concepts at
home.
Healthy Snacks and Beverages
WEI will provide a free nutritional snack and beverage for each
student at each tutoring session. We do not serve sodas, diet drinks,
or salty snacks.
Rewarding Work Ethic and Effort
Acknowledgment of work ethic and effort are critical aspects of a
student’s self-motivation. Students who complete the program
may be eligible to
receive a refurbished desktop computer. Other incentives will be provided to
keep students energized and encouraged on their journey to academic
improvement during their enrollment.
Parental Involvement
Your child’s success and your involvement are inter-related. Together,
WEI communicates its commitment to you and your child through its
Vision and
Mission Statements, our history of high quality
performance, and our Values. We ask our parents to follow the WE&I
Parents’ Pledge:
|
WE&I Parents/Guardian Pledge
WE&I
(Wims Enterprises and I) commit to my child never being left
behind. As the parent/guardian, I will:
-
Ensure that my child attends all sessions;
-
Ask
my child to discuss what s/he has learned;
-
Use
the sandwich technique when giving my child feedback (positive
comment, share concern, and positive comment);
-
Review my child’s work and provide assistance when
appropriate;
-
Communicate with WEI as needed.

Note to Parents: Please take a look at our Students Pages. We
have sections for elementary, middle, and high school students. We
wrote these pages directly to students to help them understand that
going to tutoring is a huge benefit for them and can be fun. For
younger kids, parents may want to help them with the reading and
completing the puzzle. For middle schoolers, discuss how tutoring
can be fun (the most frequent and important evaluation of anything
by this age group). The page for high schoolers discusses the
connection between tutoring and achievement of their dreams
post-graduation.
